“I have grown rice for 22 years - like my father and grandfather.”
Farmer
Nguyen Van Thanh Farmer · Mekong Delta, Vietnam

One of thousands of small family plots along the Mekong, where the river runs the calendar — it says when to plant, when to flood the fields, when to cut. The camera sits at the edge of the paddy Thanh’s family has worked for three generations. Watch for a while and you’ll catch the morning mist lift off the water, the ducks let out between the rows, and the slow green of rice getting ready to harvest.

Farmer, in his own words: “I’ve grown rice here for 22 years, the same fields my father and grandfather worked. People tell me farming is the old way of doing things. To me it’s the most modern thing there is, because it still feeds everyone. The plot you’re watching is the one tied to your harvest in the game. When it’s ready here, it’s ready there.”
What’s growing now: Right now: jasmine rice, about three weeks out. Flood season just ended, so the water’s low and the whole field has gone deep green.
